About our ProgramEstablished 32 years ago, in April of 1978, Durango Crime Stoppers was the first Crime Stoppers organization in Colorado. It was fashioned after a Crime Stoppers organization in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Our Program now operates as an independant organization. The concept has developed into a combination of efforts by local media, businesses, civic and social clubs, law enforcement agencies, and the public. Donations of airtime, newspaper space, and reward monies have established Crime Stoppers as an effective tool to fight crime in the area. Mission StatementCrime Stoppers is comprised of diverse, active and dedicated community representatives. Crime Stoppers provides a method for local law enforcement to receive information on crimes. These efforts increase tips, which in turn increase arrests in our community. Our primary purposes are to accept donations for the payment of rewards to persons who provide information concerning criminal activity and to forward such infomation to appropriate law enforcement agencies. Our organization ensures that the identity of any person who provides information concerning criminal activity to the organization remains unknown, and not disclosed any further to all persons and entities, including officers and employees of the organization. We assist law enforcement agencies in the detection of crime and apprehension of criminal offenders by promptly forwarding information recieved concerning criminal acts to such agencies, and fosters the detection of crime and encourage citizens to report information about criminal activity. We encourage news and other media to promote local crime stopper organizations by informing the public of the fuctions and benefits of the organization. Who is Involved
